Shut Up and Eat

My favorite Saturday morning breakfast place. You are encouraged to come in your pajamas and get a discount for doing so. It seems however that I have a mental block on remembering its name... Stuff u face, sit down and eat, etc... At less my wife knows what I am asking her when I say "let's go to Sit down and Shutup". A big smile will cross her face and she'll just look at me and say... Someday you'll get it right!

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST MONDAY.

THE NATL WEATHER SVC IN MOUNT HOLLY HAS ISSUED A WIND ADVISORY.WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST MONDAY.

THE DOUBLE BARREL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMS AROUND THE AREA WILL MERGE INTO ONE NEAR EASTERN ME OVERNIGHT & CONTINUE TO INTENSIFY ON ITS WAY THROUGH THE CANADIAN MARITIMES ON MONDAY.

WEST WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE TONIGHT & PROBABLY REACH THEIR PEAK DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE DAY ON MONDAY. SUSTAINED WEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 20 TO 30 MPH WITH PEAK GUSTS REACHING AROUND 45 MPH. THESE WIND SPEEDS SHOULD KNOCK DOWN SOME WEAK TREES, TREE LIMBS AND WIRES. THE TREES ARE GOING TO BE UNDER PRESSURE FROM SEPARATE FORCES. FROM THE INTERSTATE 95 CORRIDOR & NORTHWESTWARD THERE IS STILL ICE ON SOME TREES. THIS WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO BE SNAPPED. FARTHER TO THE SOUTHEAST, PRECIPITATION TOTALS SO FAR THIS MONTH HAVE AVERAGED TWICE THE NORMAL DECEMBER AMOUNT ALREADY. THE SUPERSATURATED SOIL WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR SHALLOW ROOTED TREES TO BE KNOCKED DOWN.

IN ADDITION TO THE WIND, THIS AIR MASS WILL BE THE COLDEST ONE OF THE SEASON SO FAR. WIND CHILL FACTORS COME MON MORNING WILL AVERAGE AROUND ZERO WITH READINGS WELL BELOW ZERO OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN. PLEASE DRESS APPROPRIATELY IF YOU HAVE TO SPEND MUCH TIME OUTDOORS.

BE PREPARED FOR THE LIKELIHOOD OF SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES. ALSO IF POSSIBLE DO NOT PARK VEHICLES UNDER TREES THAT ARE ENCASED IN ICE OR ARE SHALLOW ROOTED SUCH AS WILLOWS. A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WIND GUSTS OF AROUND 45 MPH ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT. ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES ESPECIALLY ON NO. TO SO. OVERPASSES. USE EXTRA CAUTION. WINDS WILL DIMINISH MON AFTERNOON AS THE INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM SLOWLY MOVES FARTHER AWAY.

What Happened to November?

November has come and gone in such a flash that it has left my head spinning. the first Sunday of the month Mom-in-law snuck off the ER in the wee hours of the morning that day. Sim and I woke up to a very quiet house that day. Most unusual in our house. Thankfully Pops had his cell phone with him and we located them at the hospital. A quick dress and off we went. Mom was to be admitted for what would turn out to be an 6 day stay. With visits to the hospital every evening and Sim needing to spend most of her time there during the day things started to backup at home. On Monday afternoon Sim got a call from her doctor that her Ultrasonic showed a tumor on her Thyroid that needed to be biopsied quickly. That Tuesday found us on our way to Englewood Hospital for a needle byopsy.  The tumor wasn’t cancer but she needed her Thyroid out.  That following Saturday Mom was to be moved into Rehab for help with clearing her lungs. Sim and I decided to keep our long weekend in Williamsburg VA.  It was fun and interesting but we cut our weekend short so that she could see Dr. Ho an ENT specialist for a surgery consult. Surgery was scheduled for the 3rd Friday of the month. Surgery was scheduled for the 3rd Friday of the month. Thins were quiet for a few days. mom-in-law was in Rehab, Simmy was anxiously awaiting her surgery and Pops was busy working and running to the Rehab to see Mom. Then Thursday the night before surgery things took a dive. At the meeting I got a call that Mom was being taken to the hospital as her potassium levels were incredibly high and that this could lead to heart or kidney issues depending on which way it went. I got into the ER was donning gown and gloves when Mom asked me to look in on Pops…. ? Pops was across the hall being checked out. Diagnosis: Pneumonia, but he would be going home that night and Mom was once again being checked into the hospital, this time with kidney failure. I sent Dad home with a friend and hung out until Mom was settled into her room, then heading home myself, arriving a little after 2:00 AM. then up at 5:00 AM to feed Sim as she had to be done eating by 6:00 AM for her stomach to be empty for her 1:30 PM surgery. Since we had to be there by 10:30 we cleaned up and headed out for Englewood. the doctor was running late so her surgery didn’t get started until 2:00 PM.  The surgery was to be only 2 hours and right on time a nurse came out to tell me they were closing her up and she would be out in 15 minutes. At this point my Sister-in-law needed to head out and as the surgery was over there was no need for her to stay with me. Somewhere around 4:30 I started to inquire about if she was out or if she had been taken to a room with telling me. The receptionist called back the the head recovery nurse, who stated Sim wasn’t out of surgery yet and that she would go into the OR and see what was going on…. she came back out to see me around 5:30 PM and said she had gome in and they were about to start closing shortly. When I asked why so long, she did not have an answer for me. Dr. Ho came out to see me a little after 6:00. He looked beat. He started with…. Everything is okay…. Then came the details…. as they were starting to close up, another tumor was seen that was twice as big as the Thyroid and it’s tumors. Worse, it was attached to the Jugular, Carotid, and the major nerve pack for the right side. Ultrasonic scan had not shown it as it was behind the large Thyroid tumor. He then said that they almost closed her up at that point and left it for someone else.  Dr. Ho then stepped back and asked the surgery team if they thought they could handle this tumor… All agreed they thought they could. So instead of subjecting Sim to two surgeries, they decided to go for it. Seeing as we do not take blood, this had to be done with great skill as either of the arteries cold cause her to bled out and if the nerve pack was nicked, so could be paralyzed. 2 and a half hours after the surgery was originally to have finished. Not wonder the Doctor looked like he was beat. a few minutes later I got to see Sim… the first thing she asked was what time it was… then why so long. I didn’t tell her right away. I didn’t want her to worry. We arrived in a room around 9:00 PM. the cafe was closed so I hit the vending machines for dinner. The nurse took pity on me and located a recliner and had brought in. We both got woken every 2 hours as they took blood, gave pills and checked vitals. Saturday was not without its excitement. Mom’s blood count had dropped to 8.6 and they were starting to push blood on her. Being 1.5 hours away, I called my book study conductor who is on the hospital liaison committee. He headed right over. Dad was at home and grounded to bed so he really couldn’t help much. With they situation under control. Sim had to stay in the hospital for 24 hours from the end of the surgery so discharge wasn’t until 7:30 Saturday night. Home by 9:00 and we both fell into bed exhausted. The rest is history… Mom was released  the next day, as it was discovered that her diagnosis was wrong and that the kidneys would correct themselves after she drank enough water.  The next week Sim slowly got better. then came Thursday night. About 8:00 PM Sim’s throat tightened up and  she got intense pain. I called the doctor (yes on Thanksgiving’s night he called us back) and off we went to Englewood for a CT scan with contrast with that done and an okay from the doctor that the pain was from everything settling into its new locations, we headed home arriving 6:00 AM. I had got up at 5:00 AM Thursday and has enough coffee in me to not sleep, so after dropping them off I headed into work on Friday. It was not to be until 10:00 that night that I would finally drift off to sleep. Almost 36 hours later. 3 days later Sim got her voice back and is feeling much better. Mom and Dad are back home and doing good. But November is over. This month will not be forgotten very soon, but I was so busy, it passed in a blink. Being the only one who was healthy the whole month meant that I was the go to guy for the month. I need a month off. I need to sleep in. I need to get up and have a cup of coffee, feed the ducks that fly in to the backyard in the morning, but most of all I need to hang with my wife and enjoy her. I never have taken her for granted, and having come this close to losing her, I need to spend time with her and catch up on the missed time… Hello December, please bring me snow SOON!!! Thank you.

Sign of Fall

The time for tractors has pass. This was from October ans was a common site just outside of town. The fields are now cutdown and the frost has killed the summer plants. The pool has iced over for the moment but will thaw by this weekend. Winter has yet to take full hold.

No touch Elevator?

This was a new one to me.

Another Cool Fall Day

It’s all of 60 outside and heading down to 34 tonight. Our 2nd frost of the year has come and gone. My summer flowering plants are dead. Fall has truly set in and is taking a firm hold on the area. This weekend was spent decorating the front porch and planting bulbs. Daffodils, Hydrangeas, and Tulips are in their beds, along with crocus dotted through out the yard. I have never done the bulb thing and my knees and back are letting me know that I did something new. Here’s a quick shot of the front porch when we were done.

Winterizing on a Fall weekend

Gave the yard it’s final mow of the year. Grass stopped growing a few weeks ago but I was to busy to deal with it. Emptied all the terra cotta pots of tomatoes and peppers and stored in shed so that I will not make the mistake of leaving them out to freeze and crack like last year. Still learning a few things about living in the north and not tropical Florida. Hoed under all the vegetable and flower beds. Cut back all the dead plants and began the process of closing the pool. While today will be a warm on, almost 75 this afternoon, which I am finding hard to believe. Yard Sale is now behind us. Got to get rid of the unsold junk left over. Trying to set aside money for vacation in a few weeks. Don’t need much as most of the vacation will be heading into the woods to take pictures of the fall trees. It’s time to get away for a few days, and unplug from the usual routine of life. A winterizing of my brain. Clearing out the corners and finishing some projects, before winter settles in.

Feeling the Fall

The air has a definite crispness to it and the nights are falling into the upper 40s. The leaves are just starting to change colors, from the greens of summer into the Reds and Yellows of fall. When we have a nice blustery wind, handfuls of leaves take flight in the air and along the ground. Soon that will be whole trees of leaves floating along in the air. A time to air out the fleeces, ready the winter clothes, and enjoy the season. Fresh apples from the orchards, the smell of fires from the chimneys and pumpkin pies cooling in windows. Fall is a truly beautiful season. An ending of the heat and green of summer, and the beginning of the final harvest of the earth’s provisions for the year. A time for the earth to ready itself for a long rest, wrapped in a wonderful white blanket of snow and rebuild itself for next year. Fall always seems to be a quieting of all things. A slowing down. I know I’m wrong about this as the birds, squirrels and ground hogs all are rushed, eating everything they can and getting as fat as possible. Now if I could only KEEP from doing the same…

Goodbye Hanna, Hello Fall

with all the anticipation of Hanna, I was ready for a day locked in my upstairs home office, with flickering power and candles. BUT then there was the reality. I got up to an overcast sky, and drove into work on a Saturday. I put in a good 6 hours and headed back home with the wind blowing briskly. Around 2:00 PM EST the rain started to come down in little drops and a sprinkling that lasted for an hour started. This was follow by some very strong squalls for the next hour or so. Then Hanna was gone. The 7-10 inches of rain, when all was over, only amounted to only 3 inches total. Sunday morning was greeted with deep blue sky and blazing bright sun. I looked like a late spring day out and only made it up to 84 degrees. Today is also another blue sky day, rain tomorrow and then the temp falls to highs of barely 70. Summer appears to have fled along with Hanna. Fall already appears as the first leaves are beginning to fall lightly and the trees are losing their green and are changing ever slightly to browns, yellows and reds. Soon they will take on their true fall colors and the air will turn crisp and blustery. Will a cool summer lead us to a cold and snowy winter? I can only hope for a good snow this winter. In the meantime fall is coming, fires in the backyard, roasting marshmallows on sticks and pots of harvest stews simmering on the stove. Fleece jackets and hot cocoa by the fire. Squash baked with butter and brown sugar, Fall festivals with kettle corn and candled apples. Baked apples, fire roasted corn, and the Red Bank Jazz festival. To each season there is it's own beauty. Fall is the season of eating, the fattening before winter. This is for animals like bears and ground hogs. Hopefully is it a time for outdoor actives like walking trails, photo journeys into the woods, and laying on the ground at night and staring up into the sky, counting the stars...  "I think I'll just go have a lie down now...."

Light at End of Tunnel Maybe Seen

Three more days is what I am told is all that's left for me to be onsite before my apprentice takes over. This means an end to the 4:30 AM wake ups and a return to my office in Eatontown only 15 minutes from home instead of this 2 hour drive each way.  Looking forward to being out from behind the wheel very much. Ready to get back and dig into some meatier tasks.

Come Thursday it will be all right, Come... -Sorry Jimmy-

Fay's knocking on Mom's Door

Looks like Mom might be in for a windy/rainy night and all day Tuesday. If I was still living down there I would be rapidly be backing up servers, hanging tarps for that just in case the roof leaks, and readying to shutdown all server racks. But that was another lifetime. I don't have those worries anymore. Those responsibilities are on others now.

I tried to check the National Hurricane Center for updated information by the site is down. As it looks like Miami has already met Fay they could be experiencing technical problems like power outages or downed Internet connections, or maybe their servers are just not robust enough to support all the hits they are getting.

Intellicast.com is still up and running (click here for Radar Page), so I am able to get a radar overview of the southern part of the state. I was also able to scrape this Tropical Storm Notice.

It's dark out, I smell Coffee, it must be another work day... it's only Thursday

These 4:30 AM wake ups are starting to drag on me. I'm trying to balance my meetings and family life in the evenings with my need for sleep, but I'm starting to fail at it. I'm half way through my first thermo mug of coffee and ready to finalize the training of my scanning apprentice by tomorrow. in the meantime I'm starting to dream of the weekend. I have a few verses of a song in a loop in my head,

"I'd like to go where the pace of life's slow
Could you beam me somewhere Mr. Scott?
Any ol' place here on earth or in space
You pick the century and I'll pick the spot"

"Boat drinks
Waitress I need two more boat drinks..."

- lyrics from Boat Drinks by Jimmy Buffett -

Just need to slow down for a few moments and see the world around me. Enjoy some time with my wife and her wonderful eyes and smile that warms me more then the sun. Maybe grab a movie, lay in the sun, go to the beach, something...

maybe some even some Boat Drinks...  Oh, Waitress..

Wednesday - pushing it through

So the up side for the day is listening to MacBreak Weekly live in the web. I am out onsite again today and am connected to the web via a Sprint aircard.  As long as nothing major wants the web (email, twitter, Trillian) the audio is good. Other then that the day has been hard. The 4:30 AM alarm clock is getting tiresome, and I am ready to get back to regular work hours again. Seems like things are heavy all around me, but I know that it's just me being tired and I need to not let it effect those around me in a negative way. Accomplish all my current work tasks, keep checking off items on my home to-do list, and fill-in where needed for either when others need help. Just need to make it to the weekend when I need to get out with my wife... somewhere. Maybe we can just hit the road with our cameras and capture summertime in New Jersey.

PS: forgot to post this yesterday so here it is in the wee hours of the morning...

Artistic Training

Spending the day training a fellow employee on a film scanner. Film scanners unlike document scanner are on the artistic side. It's like scanning a photograph. You have to be able to make adjustments as you see the scans, for each roll of film is unique.  Microfilm is a photographic process and a lot of people forget that. So for training you can "try" to cover everything that "might" need to be done, but the best training is to sit with the new scanner operator and as issues come up help them to learn the how's and whys that correct the issues. in other words, it makes for a boring day. Sitting and waiting for problems to correct. If I was in my office I could be working on other things, but I am on locate hours from home, and feel like I am spinning my wheels and not really accomplishing anything.  But I know that this training will allow me to get back to the office and have the trainee take over what I am doing. It's a slow process, but needed so that I can move on to the next project.

Then again it could be that I really hate Mondays!

Comcast: Comcast Tech Accuses 74-Year-Old Man Of Stealing Cable Service

Yet another fun Story about Comcast. I guess they don't have a public relations dept anymore.
Between Bittorrent throttling, installation mistakes and billing errors, how exactly are they staying in business.

Snipped

Comcast: Comcast Tech Accuses 74-Year-Old Man Of Stealing Cable Service
Pretend you're a Comcast tech who has been asked to transfer Ally's account and internet service to her 74-year-old grandfather's house. Your work order shows that Ally ordered only internet service, but when you shimmy up the pole, you see that the house is also set to receive cable service. Do you:

* A) Connect the internet service and leave.
* B) Connect the internet service and check to see if the 74-year-old man has a separate account for the cable service.
* C) Accuse the 74-year-old man of stealing cable, and declare "I don't want to see your fucking bill" when the granddaughter tries to explain the situation.

Ally's story, after the jump...

So here's my story with Comcast:

My girlfriend and I were living in an apartment where we had Comcast Internet, Phone, and Digital Cable service. After our lease was up, we decided to move into my grandpa's house for a year or so to save some money to put down on a house. Anyways - I called Comcast and set a disconnect date at our apartment. My grandpa has basic extended cable through comcast, and for us, that's good enough. So I asked them to cancel the cable and phone line for us, and asked if they could just transfer the internet service and set an appointment for a tech to come out and hook up the internet at my Grandpa's. All went well. I was told a tech would be at my Grandpa's the following Tuesday between 10 and 1pm.

As most of us know, Comcast techs don't normally show up until about 2 minutes until that window is over, but this time - the guy actually showed up at about 10:05am. Great, I thought. I don't have to sit at home all day waiting for someone to show up. He pulls his truck into the alleyway and comes into the house to see where we want the line hooked up. I proceed to show him the spare bedroom where I'll be connecting the router. He obviously noticed my Grandfather watching cable tv in the living room.

He then tells me he's going outside to check the line on the poll. I go upstairs and about 5 minutes later, I come outside to witness my grandpa and the Comcast guy in a screaming match. The Comcast tech is threatening to leave and I ask "What the heck is going on?!" Well, my Grandpa starts telling me that he disconnected his cable and says we do not have a cable account with Comcast and basically accuses my Grandpa of hijacking cable. Okay, last time I checked, most 74 years old probably don't know how to hijack cable. So my Grandpa gets really upset and starts back for the house. I'm trying to find out from the Comcast tech what is going on and my Grandpa comes back out 2 seconds later with a Comcast bill in his hand. He goes to hand it to the Comcast tech and he rudely replies "Sir, I don't want to see your fucking bill. If you don't go back in your house and quit disrespecting me, I'm going to just leave."

Meanwhile, I ask my Grandpa to try and let me straighten it out and go inside for a minute because I could tell at this point he was getting really upset. So I continue to ask the guy what the hell is going on all the while he is telling me he isn't going back in the house to hook up my internet because he doesn't appreciate my Grandpa "disrespecting him". Well, from what I saw, my Grandpa didn't really deserve to get his cable turned off and treated in such a way. I finally talk him into hooking up the internet (I needed it for school as my homework is submitted online). But the issue still remains with my Grandpa's service. So I ask the tech why he thinks we don't have cable. He replies "When I look up the phone number on the account, it only shows internet, no cable television. That's a red flag mam."

So I immediately figure out what's going on. I tell him calmly "Okay, well you are looking under MY phone number. And yes, I only have internet service in my name seeing as I cancelled the phone and cable service. My grandfather has a SEPARATE Comcast account from me, on which he only has extended cable. If you would have let him show you the bill, maybe you would have noticed it is two separate account numbers!" I wanted it that way so then the internet bill comes in my name. It's just easier that way when paying bills.

He then rudely replies with "Mam, I don't really care. I'm doing my job, and I'm not stupid. Comcast will not allow two different accounts at the same address so I already know you are blatantly lying to me." Well obviously this was news to me. And he proceeds to just leave without turning back on my Grandpa's cable, which he PAYS for.

We have a Comcast center about 2 minutes from our house, so we drive over there. The lady proceeds to tell me she can't turn back on the cable because the account was flagged.

Alright, well obviously he saw 2 accounts if he specifically flagged my Grandpa's.

About six calls to Comcast later, and I finally get someone on the line willing to fix the situation. He tells me he has no idea what he was talking about and there isn't anything saying 2 Comcast accounts can't be at the same house. He turns my Grandpa's cable back on and gives him a $10 credit, which in all honesty, is kind of insulting for the crap the rep and the center gave us. Not only was the tech wrong, but he treated my Grandfather like crap.

Who the hell is Comcast hiring these days?

Me have Ribs... Dad?

Sim's away and Clouie has glued herself to me. Even more since I brought the ribs in from smoking on the grill all afternoon in the rain. My backyard and now home have the sweet smell of mesquite filling them. Clouie is being exceptionally friendly. I think she want a rib from all the head butting and purring... What do you think?

Brain Toniq?

Brain Toniq of Texas

Sound like I need to get some of this drink and try.  The TWIT network has been drinking this for a while now and rave about it's good taste. I just need to cut back on the coffee without losing my edge. Wonder if I can get a case shipped to NJ?

Last night's dinner

The Clam Bake was the special of the night at Spike's in Pt. Pleasant. It was almost a 2 hour wait, but worth it. The atmosphere was that of picinic tables and benchs. It's BYOB and no smoking. We spent the wait time sitting out front with a large crowd who broght their beer and wine and were relaxing drinking it while waiting in the low 60's degree weather. As soon as we were sitted. Creamy cole slaw was delivered to the table and as we a few minutes outside to study the menu we ordered our meals. The soups were all good. My lobster chowder was fantastic. While I had the Clambake which consisted of small lobster tail, king crab, clams, mussels & shrimp all steamed with baked potato and an ear of corn, other had the crab stuffed shrimp or Shrimp Scampi. All we VERY happy with their meals. Can't report on their homemade pies as we were to full to try. A wonderful find here on the Jersey shore.
